When we talk about Formentera and connect it with sports, it is absolutely essential to talk about summer. A lot of different sports can be practiced both in summer and winter; but, undoubtedly, water sports play the most important role.
Formentera has a wonderful coastline and beautiful beaches, average winds and pleasant temperatures, which are mild all year round. All of these features make the island an ideal spot to enjoy a wide variety of water sports. La Sabina Port plays host to two yachting harbours, which accommodate some three hundred moorings between them: "Marina de Formentera" y "Formentera Mar". Moreover, various competitions are held there, such as "The Peñón de Ifach Trophy" and the "Round Formentera Sailing Race". Furthermore, there are diving and sailing schools in Formentera where the visitor can learn to enjoy all the possibilities that the sea has to offer. The Formentera sea beds are among the most valuable treasures of Ses Salines Natural Reserve. In addition, the meadows of Posidonia Oceanica (known as the "alguers" in the local tongue) were declared to form part of the World Heritage List by UNESCO, along with the city of Ibiza. The excellent quality and transparency of the waters around Formentera, and the diversity of its substrata, sandy and rocky sea beds, cliffs and sea caves are home to a large number of fish and other marine species. The visitor can also choose to go on sea trips, such as paying a visit to the island of Espalmador, or going on a round trip of Formentera by boat, etc. Another option available to the visitor is that of renting out boats in order to go on one's own excursions. Windsurfing, canoeing, water-skiing, parasailing and other water sports can all be enjoyed along the coast of Formentera, within sight of its marvellous beaches.
In the spring and in autumn, Formentera is the best place in all of the Balearic islands to learn this sport because of it's beautiful wide beaches with flat entries into the sea, good wind conditions, and wonderful sunshine.
Formentera is probably the most beautiful spot in Europe for catamaran sailing and it offers sailors the best training possibilities in the Balearic Islands: magnificent, sandy beaches, cristal clear water, good winds, wonderful sunshine and everywhere flat, sandy entries into the sea!
Formentera has the most beautiful sandy beaches, pictorial coasts and flat entrances into the sea! Hardly someone knows it. At the Migjorn coast for example there can be really good waves. With southern winds, at the rock reefs considerable waves are breaking. Formentera presents Windsurfers a caribbean flair in the Mediterranean!
